The film also touches on the taboo subjects of colorism and beauty standards within the Black community and features an all-star cast including Larry Fishburne, Giancarlo Esposito, Tisha Campbell-Martin, Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Darryl M. This Day In Hip Hop -Ice T

Happy Birthday Ice-T

Written By @daniurbane

February 16th, 1958 – Today marks a day of celebration for a true Westside OG, Ice-T. He was born in Newark, NJ in 1958 and later moved to Los Angeles upon the traumatic deaths of his parents.

In the late 1980s, Ice-T released his debut album, Rhyme Pays. He would eventually collaborate with punk rock bands like Body Count and release a politically incorrect single such as “Cop Killer”. His controversial lyrics caused some static and made him a federal target, but to Ice-T he was simply telling the world about police brutality within LA.

During the growth of his career, Ice-T became an actor and officially stamped his career within the entertainment industry. Appearing in movies like New Jack City and securing a long run with Law in Order: SVU, he is known as a mogul.

Now he is married with children and giving back to his community to stop gang violence in his hometown of Los Angeles. Let’s show him some love and much deserved respect, happy birthday @icet !

Written By @daniurbane

FEBRURAY 14th, 1981 – Hip Hop started in the late 1970’s and changed the world drastically. Amongst some of the first rap groups was the Funky Four + 1. This group was known to be one of the first to feature a female rapper as their + 1 who is none other than Sha Rock.

There is much to debate about who was the first to do this or that within Hip Hop, and although many thought that Run DMC was the first rap group to perform on television, they’re wrong. Funky Four + 1 was invited as a special guest on Saturday Night Live by Deborah Harry, the lead singer of the punk group Blondie, who was also a close friend to the rap group.

The world was shaken when Hip Hop began to make its way across airwaves and television screens. Reaching millions of watchers, this was a pivotal moment that shifted the Culture. With their cool lyrics, syncopation, and style, the Funky Four + 1 made history as we know it.

Model of the Week @johaniet

In the 80s there was a movie called “Weird Science”. In that movie 2 nerds designed their version of the perfect woman on a computer and an electric storm accidentally brought her to life. Kelly LeBrock was never my idea of the perfect woman but Johanie Taylor is. A talented actress with a sophisticated mind, morals, humor, a pinch of Virgin Island feistiness and a beauty only paralleled by the queen Aaliyah herself. ~@adrian_zeno
